Vet Ripoff?

Tuesday, I had to go to the vet to pick up parvo vaccines for the dogs. While I was going, I decided to pick up some frontline, interceptor (worm pills), and get the goats' fecal samples checked. (Yes, this means I followed them around with ziplock baggies asking them to poop...)

After spending nearly $100 there, I learned that they are not microbiologists and cannot give me #/g counts for intestinal parasites. This is important because all goats carry some intestinal parasites and you don't want their numbers too low, but you don't want them too high, either. Keeping their numbers within a good range is just what you have to do--parasite management, not eradication. Their bodies build a tolerance to a certain level, and if you eradicate them, the goats will have a real problem as soon as they're re-introduced. So, I was given a medication that I hear is no longer effective for goat coccidia, but I suppose that is just fine, since I think my girls' numbers are fine. (The vet said that neither of them have any worms, one has a little coccidia, and the other none. The one having none actually worries me more than the one with a little!)

Anyhow, I need to check out some online suppliers of frontline, interceptor, and other goat meds, because the vet prices are really high. I was quite pleased, however, when I got home and administered all the meds. I gave shots! ME!!! The dogs didn't fuss, and they were just as good about taking their pills. I couldn't be more pleased with my my little herd!
