New Plans, Milkstand, and Frogs

Hello again! The kiddos' colds seem to be getting worse rather than better. That always makes me a bit nervous, and I hope we're not in the doctor's office by Monday for antibiotics. Please pray they get better! Right now we're battling pink eye to boot, but still have plenty of eye drops from the last go-round of it.

So, that means that we're missing swim lessons this morning again, and that Samuel will not be in the violin recital tomorrow. Most likely, David will be representing our family at church in the morning as well. Last week, Shiphrah said, "But I want to go worship God, too!" A good opportunity to teach her that worship isn't just singing songs and listening to a sermon but is seen in everyday obedience.

The barn and fence are wearing us out! Not only is it physically draining, but there are so many unbudgeted items that it's also financially draining! Who knew we would need 8 (or more?) hinges and that they are over $5 each? And latches! Who knew that we would spend several hundred dollars on screws?! Or that a milkstand made primarily of leftover materials would still require $60 worth of little items? So.... we think we'll modify barn & fence #1 to accomodate both does and bucks. Then we might do a chicken coop and frame and roof barn #2 for David's tractor and leave the siding and fencing for another time (next year?) We need the rest.

Still debating on whether to cancel the chicken order for this year... Generation Sales in Westmoreland has some coops that are relatively inexpensive and would sure save us time and energy in building. We're learning that our time and energy are definitely worth something!

A positive side to these changes is that it will allow us to separate the does and bucks sooner. That needs to happen. Jack has been taking notice of Julia and curling his lip... It will also give us another area should we put the bucks in barn #2 at a later date. Other areas come in quite handy if you need to separate animals for some reason or other (illness, kidding, etc.)

Here is a picture of the above mentioned milkstand! That was my main project yesterday. David came to my rescue when I didn't sand the only movable part enough to budge it without the use of a hammer! And when I needed to use a jigsaw. Don't mind all the weeds in my mulch. I have yet to pull them! Anyhow, I look forward to using it tonight. I need to trim the girls' hooves and this is the perfect spot to do that!

Samuel caught a very large frog two days ago. We gave it plenty of bugs in it's mayonaise jar, but it wouldn't eat. Samuel watched him swim in the baby pool in the back yard yesterday. He carried him around all day and told me over and over how much he LOVES his frog. Then last night before coming in the house from working on the fence, we learned that Grandma set froggy free. (Is there something wrong with a woman who has more compassion for a frog than her grandson? ;) Just as Samuel was about to lose it, I spotted another frog in the mulch. You know, when you become a mom, you sign up to do all sorts of gross things--wipe poopy bottoms and snotty noses, doctor up some ugly scrapes and cuts, clean some horrible messes--but I don't ever remember thinking that motherhood would mean catching frogs. Did you get that? I COUGHT A FROG!!!! So now froggy junior is the happy (?) inhabitant of the mayonaise jar and Samuel is an overjoyed, albeit sick, little boy once again. He even sings songs to the frog. With a sore throat. That's love.
