What do Great Pyrennes, Storm Shelters, and Chicken Coops have to do with one another? Probably not much of anything! I did have experience with all three yesterday, however, and that title sounded far more interesting than, "My day yesterday." I got vaccines and de-wormer for Snow White and Cinder Ella, the GP puppies that will be arriving on our farm in June. They'll be our livestock guardian dogs and one will live with Jillian and Julia; one with Jack and Jarlath. I couldn't get a close up picture of the two of them, but here's a picture of a full grown GP and one of their littermates. On one of my errands,

I saw something on the side of the road that looked interesting, so vowed to stop and get a closer look on my return trip. This storm shelter is what I saw. I had hopes that it would be large enough to do multiple duties, such as being a wine cellar, cheese aging cellar, and root vegetable storing cellar. This appears to be only large enough for one function, however, and lacks necessary storage shelving for what I'd want. There is a larger unit on their website, but we're probably better off building something on site--a lesson I should have learned with a mobile home, perhaps?! :) Anyhow, unless we find a secret cave on our property somewhere, this is another of our dreams. I never thought I'd become the

farmer or foody type, but am discovering that this stuff really is fun! Finally, I took pictures of a really cool chicken coop. Here is one of them. It is built on skids and can be moved from one location to another by being pulled with a tractor. It has 2 levels, with a trap door to a ramp that can be opened and closed from the outside. The chickens are kept on the top level at night so as to protect them from predators, and are allowed to the bottom level to forage on fresh greens during the day. There are nest boxes in the back and exterior doors for easy access to the eggs. The whole design allows for ease of managment, with very little cleaning or changing of litter necessary. We have planned a chicken coop into the design of our second barn to build this summer, but this coop gives me ideas. Maybe we'll plan our coop layout in a similar fashion?
