Today we had our music lessons... well, Samuel & Shiphrah did. Samuel confesses that he's not all that crazy about playing violin, but it is better than swimming. :) I'm certain that as he gets older, he will grow to enjoy it. He's very serious and works at continually improving and doing a good job. I'm very pleased with his progress, both musically and in his work ethic. I enjoy watching the concentration on his face and have a pretty good grasp on what is going through his head.
Shiphrah, on the other hand, could hardly care less about piano. It seems that the idea of sitting down to the piano and playing something is a fun and romantic idea, but doing any actual work in order to get to that point holds absolutely no interest for her. Today was much like her first lesson way back in June. She was off in La La Land while Mr. Cline, the instructor, held her fingers and made them play the correct notes. She wanted to tell stories or play an entirely different tune (her own) with her other hand or tickle the foot pedals with her feet. Her mind is a complete mystery to me and I find that frustrating to the point of tears!
Whenever we are able, we will switch Shiphrah to a Saturday lesson time. This way, David can take her. She does far better in practice at home if Daddy is watching, and he's able to motivate and inspire her in a way I could only dream of doing. The "mama's boy / daddy's girl" theme is alive and well in our home. Hopefully, this will bring about better results.
After lessons, we went to Daddy's school and spent some time with him. This is the 3rd day (out of 4) of the middle school basketball tournament, and his school is hosting it this year. We had dinner in the library, which was set up as a hospitality room for the school personnel and guest coaches who have had to be working the entire day rather than getting to go home and eat. We enjoyed a little time with Daddy, and I enjoyed seeing some people that I don't get to see often enough. I even saw a teacher I used to work with from White House and am embarrassed to admit that I didn't recognize her at first with her cute new hairdo! The kids enjoyed having a little more room to run around indoors.
That was about it today. The barn floor got 8 new bags of wood shavings and we got 6 eggs. Jarlath's head is oozing a bit, but not horrible. Solomon helped with evening barn chores. We're now just resting at home and waiting for Daddy... Tomorrow, my cousin is coming through town to see a concert and we will get to have her over for lunch and babysit her daughter for the evening. We're looking forward to it!
