Hi all! Our chicks are doing very well! They seem to have bounced back nicely from their long hot trip, and the couple that I thought were on death's door are now just a little more tired than the rest, but seem to be up and moving about, eating, drinking, and acting alive. I think their wing feathers have even grown since yesterday!
Today, David put in several fence posts and a gate! I stood there to hand him tools on occasion. Digging holes with a post-hole digger is just not a job I was cut out for. Maybe 10 years ago, but it's been a long time since I've seen a gym and boy can I tell! (Everyone else can, too, but we're talking about arm strength here, not clothing size!) Anyhow, holes are dug, posts are in and stabilized, concrete poured. Tomorrow after church, we can attach the goat panels and remove the supporting boards, and we'll be ready for bucklings on Monday! I have to bleach the feeder, though, because the girls have been using it as a crib--and a potty, I'm afraid!
Anyhow, after all that today, I scooped up some of the alfalfa hay dust. I read that it is good for chickens. I took a couple handfuls of it in to them and didn't realize until it was down that it also had a few very tiny bugs. At first, I thought, "Oh no! I have to get those bugs out of my house!" Then I thought, "Wait! Birds like bugs. Maybe they'll ...well, lookatathat! They are!" The chicks were doing more than just eating them--they were eating them, chasing each other for them, chirping up a storm, and whooped it up in grand chick fashion, I'd say!
So after that success, it was time to get another shower and wash the day's crud off. (How did farmers live before showers? We easily take 2 a day here all summer!) When I got done, I looked over at the chicks (they're in the garden tub, in case you didn't notice) and said something, I can't remember what. Well, at the sound of my voice, the chicks all stopped what they were doing, got quiet, and looked my way! I know they were thinking, "Pay Attention! It's the BUG LADY!" These little chicks have been so much fun and entertainment! I could sit and watch them for hours if I had the time. (This must be what farmers did before television! :)
Now, I wonder, if I give my children bugs...
