It really stinks when you're wrong and someone comes up and says to you, "I told you so!" Well, it really stinks more when you have the opportunity to say that to yourself.
Last night before nodding off to sleep, I heard the rain and thought, "I should go check that chick brooder and see if it's water tight." Then I thought, "I'm so tired. It has a top. It's under the deck. It will be fine." Well, I shouldda...
This morning when I went out to tend to them, chick food and fresh newspapers in hand, I found something horrible. One little chick standing amid 21 dead, drowned chicks just peeping her little head off. I'm sure she was scared, tired, and hoping someone would hear her and come to her rescue. She is now the lonely resident of my newspaper lined bathtub with only food, water, and a heat lamp to keep her company. Samuel is doing his best, but he's a featherless biped and it's not quite the same... I tried putting her in with our older chickens first, but that quickly ended when one of the Rhode Island Reds tried to eat her!
The task of draining the water out of the brooder and disposing of those dead chicks was not a fun one. And to think, if only I had just got out of bed last night and put some plastic over the top of the brooder.... it would have been a lot less work, a lot less disgusting, and a lot less sad.

Addendum: We've decided to name her Noah (even though that's not a girls' name) because she survived the flood.
Billie...I'm so sorry! That's very sad and horrible!
Missed you at worship today...today was my first day back...unfortunately, I think I have mastitis now :(
It was really disgusting. I'm going to order more chicks, b/c Noah is driving me crazy! I'm begining to understand why my mom wanted to get chicken diapers for the one of hers she had to keep in her house for a while apart from the others... She'd be a lot happier if she weren't confined or so lonely! They really do make chicken diapers! I'm not going to get them... New chicks will arive Nov. 23ish. :)
I missed being at worship today. I was exhausted. Noah kept me awake chirping ALL NIGHT! It's amazing how loud a little chick can be!
I'm glad you got to be at worship today! It's so hard being away for so long! Mastitis, though... no fun at all! Do you think that's from overdoing it a bit? There's a really good drug out for that now--the lactation consultants at A Mother's Place (in Centennial) told me what it was and my GP perscribed it for me--knocked it out right away. Didn't bring on yeast, either, which made it great in my book!
Funny, I like to do things as naturally as possible, but studying and embracing postmillenialism has given me a whole new outlook on the common grace God has bestowed upon even ogres like BigPharma and their role in accomplishing His purposes. I don't think there will be mastitis in the new Earth. :)
Wow. It's really too late for me to be writing... ;)
Hey---yeah, I probably did overdue it on Saturday, and by Sunday night felt like I had the flu(among other things :)). Wendy actually recommended two things to me(a very potent herb and a homeopathic remedy that I happened to have) that totally knocked it out in 24 hours...feeling much better now, just trying to rest...
Oh Good! Wendy is like Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman with those homeopathic remedies! What did she recommend?
She recommended belladona and Poke Root(Phytolacca decandra). I guess the belladona takes care of the flu-like symtoms, and the herb must have anti-bacterial/antibiotic qualities. It is amazing how quickly it worked!
Huh. Belladonna must have been the homeopathic. I know it's poisonous in herbal form, but have a friend whose sister's constitutional remedy is belladonna--whether ear infections, colds, etc. belladonna cures her. They did everything to treat this girl's ears medicinally to include tubes a few times to no avail, but belladonna worked. I wish homeopathy could be practiced legally here in TN. I'd like to see a good homeopathic practioner w/o having to go to one of the coasts! My chiropracter dabbles in it, but he's not a true homeopathic practioner.
Poke root? We actually have that in our yard! I looked it up, and sure enough, mastitis is one of its indications. I wonder how one might go about harvesting this...
We almost ordered a bundle of medicinal plants from a special nursury out in Oregon last year... then after doing research on what I wanted, discovered that most of what I wanted, we already had in my yard and thought they were weeds! Sure would be nice to know how to use all of them!
